Method: Literary Interpretation vs. Literal Interpretation
Like Movies or Old books - Citizen Kane, Dante, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare
Using the Bible to interpret the Bible - I will not seek meaning outside of the
context of the Bible without FIRST establishing meaning WITHIN the Bible.
This includes a broader understanding of the cultural context.
5 W’s & an H - Ask the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How?

Paul would go to the synagogues first (Acts 9:20;), arguing with the Hellenistic Jews

It is interesting to note the modern trend of Christians seeking to understand Hebrew roots.
IMPORTANT: to our modern ears, this might sound like overintellectualizing.
This wouldn’t have been necessary when the book was written.
This would have been a part of John & his audience's subconscious.

When Jesus mentioned this to the High Priest…. It was a threat, a promise.
Interesting to note: the Jerusalem Christians sold their land, possessions.
As far as I can tell, this didn’t occur anywhere else… only Jerusalem.
Could it be because Jesus had ‘condemned’ the property? Was it an act of faith
in Christ’s Matthew 24 prophecy? Acts 4:32-37, 5:1-11 then isn’t a biblical support for
socialism/communism - it’s simply Jewish Believers believing Christ & being wise
[again why cultural context/accurate understanding is paramount against heresy].

WHAT is the Scroll? What do we know from the text?
7 seals - Testament/Covenant Testament and covenant
can be used interchangeably in the Bible to refer to
mutual commitments based upon promises, obligations,
and rituals.
Written front & back - again Covenant:
Ten Commandments - Two copies like Modern contracts.
WHEN is a testament opened?
The Testator had died. The Old Covenant passed away
because of the death of the “King of the Jews”
(sign on Jesus’ cross).
WHO can open a testament?
The One who inherits - The resurrection.
He is worthy to open the new scroll, the new covenant.
Subsequently abolishing the Old and inheriting the New.
He is both the ALPHA & OMEGA, AUTHOR & FINISHER,
BEGINNING & END. Jesus accomplished this as both
a resurrected HUMAN (second Adam, the first fruit,
King of Kings, Lord of Lords) and the INFINITE GOD
(Alpha & Omega).
WHERE was it opened?
In the THRONE ROOM [the COURT] of the Great King
WHY was it opened?
The Death of the Great King & His Resurrection.
Proclamation of Judgement & Proclamation
The Old covenant was fulfilled and must be closed out
– the vassals (old Israel) – had spilled the blood of the
King (complete revolt). This triggered the curses of the
Sanctions listed in Duet & Lev in full force.
Complete annihilation resulted. After AD 70,
Jerusalem was desolate until well into AD 200.

- korone is not found in the NT, the only other word for “crown”
is diadema - 3 times: 2 for the beast & dragon, 1 for Christ in Rev 19.
Goes out CONQUERING - nikao - was just used 7 times in the
greetings to the churches - overcoming.
SEAL 2 - War - God takes away the conditions of peacePax Romana –
decades of peace were broken, Rome nearly collapsed in AD 68,
3 factions of Zealots in Israel, complete upheaval in “THE LAND”.
SEAL 3 - Famine – Survival – Self inflicted, the zealots burned out
the granaries, Roman siege, Cannibalism, a mother roasted & ate her child,
A complete collapse of civil society
SEAL 4 - Death – pools of blood in the Temple, bodies piled in the streets,
500 crucifixions, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan river, the port of Joppa,
the abomination of desolation
SEAL 5 - The prayers of the saints - blood at the base of the alter,
Old covenant agents spilt it?

Man - De-creation

The 144,000 – the remamnt of Israel. The Jewishness of the early church. The focus

Why is this important? Christians are wired for Hope – Faith, Hope, & Love.
We are looking for a Biblical basis for Hope.
I’m coming at this from two premises:
1. First as a Human - Original mandate from God
2. As a storyteller - Modern End Times Theology requires
me to believe that God is relying on the worst storytelling
technique to accomplish His end goal.

Fallacy of Tradition
– Leads to the 144,000. Certain things in Revelation do not make sense
unless you figure in 3 things:
1. The OT
2. The Jewishness of the Early Church
3. The Covenant Structure
- Violates the original mandate – Genesis 1 (repeated to Noah in ch 9)
- Disempowers us – fatalism, no hope for the future. 2 weeks’ notice.
We believe stuff not in the Bible (rapture, antichrist) rather than the
stuff in the Bible (glorious future, full passages in Isaiah, Ez, etc.),
the glory spreading across the earth (Hab. 2:14).
- Keeps us looking at Current events rather than looking at the Bible.
Nothing wrong with maintaining an eye what’s happening around us,
but Jesus must be first. Walking on water/eye on the storm – sinks.
The view of Revelation is from “up here looking down” (heavenly perspective)
rather than “down here looking up” (Ez.)
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN stops New York on his way to Montreal to convince the
Canadians to join the Americans as the 14th colony. The winter of 1776 has been
full of surprises. The arrow of revolution has left the quiver… will it hit the target?
