PG here, An old foal who stays in the womb a little too long will have gendon problems. I've seen this often this year. 2026 The twin colts and Clever Cowgirl's new foal, Brucy. Also, Homestead Horsemanship's foal earlier this year.

A foal that frequently backs up or walks on its heels typically suffers from tendon laxity (weak or stretched tendons) or neuromuscular weakness. While this behavior is often temporary, it requires specialized care to prevent permanent joint damage or sores.
Common Causes
- Tendon Laxity & Dropped Fetlocks: This is very common, especially in newborn or draft breed foals who were cramped in the womb. The foal’s ankles (fetlocks) may sink toward the ground, causing them to walk abnormally or step backward to balance.
- Neuromuscular Immaturity / "Dummy Foal": The foal's brain may be slow to adapt to the outside world, resulting in uncoordinated movement, standing awkwardly, or backing up aimlessly.
Immediate Steps to Take
- Limit and Monitor Exercise: Restrict long turnout times temporarily so the foal does not run its legs into fatigue or injure its joints.
- Deep Bedding: Keep the stall heavily bedded to provide traction and protect the backs of their fetlocks from painful bedsores.
- Veterinary & Farrier Support: If the legs don't naturally strengthen within a few days to a week, you should consult an equine vet.
